I avoid groups, communities, institutions, clubs and societies, because in my experience, people would love me so much from a distance, but when I start spending time with them frequently, they’d develop the pettiest problems with me. And worse, they won’t bother to communicate it directly. They’d nitpick, backbite, gang up over anything. It’s crazier that some aren’t even aware of themselves. If I asked them what wrong I did to them, they’d hardly have a response that wasn’t just made up at that moment. They can give a vague response like “You can just be somehow.” Or “You don’t get it.” I’ve also had people who read a negative meaning into anything I did. By my conduct, I might have upset them internally, or caused them to realise something about themselves that they keep running away from, that they subconsciously resolve to blacklist me in some way. So, for them: if I’m quiet it means I’m ignoring everyone because I feel too big. If I’m always cleaning it means I mean to call them dirty. If I communicate directly, it means I’m an aggressor. If I don’t complain about some things, it means I either have no problems or don’t care enough about them. They keep going. I keep noticing. Knowing well that if I pointed it out, they’d act like I committed an abomination— saying something that should never be said—for simply telling them what they in fact did, and showing them proof to ensure that they’re aware of their actions. I like people conceptually. But I don’t like being close to people. I don’t even need to be. My relationship with people is something I must progressively learn to deal with per circumstance. It’s even interesting that I’m considered likeable and I’m constantly in spaces that obviously require socialisation. I figured that to be hated, you really don’t have to act outwardly rude or cruel to people. You just have to firmly and quietly enforce some personal agency. This is literally all that’s needed. Especially in a society of the timid, covetous and disoriented. If you enforce some personal agency often, whether it’s in the form of choosing your own hobbies, enforcing your schedule, choosing to be alone sometimes, or simply choosing to not say things, you upset the demons in many people. People’s hearts literally crash when a place is quiet. They become annoyed at you for not enabling some noise. As I write this I randomly remember a man who’d disturb me for us to meet at bars to have “gentlemanly conversations.” But when the waiter brought the bill, he’d look away. Like he often expresses the need to see me, not even at my convenience, to sustain whatever he thinks of our relationship, but runs away from the bill. Am I supposed to be flattered by your likeness for me? What does it do for me? What’s your use to me? The same guy went ahead with the perception that I stopped caring for him because I naturally “ignore people a lot.” No self awareness—just self absorbed, silly and selfish in his desperation for access, connection and community with me. It’s interesting how people would feel negatively towards you, but when you keep your distance, they’d still come searching.
