@atmoio just embrace Chinese open source AI. What is token essentially on the physical level? It's just electricity converted using compute power and where do we get cheap massive amount of electricity? It's in China.

After @kenmogi's amazing success on the German book market: "Ikigai: Die japanische Lebenskunst", I think it's time to strike back with a book for the Japanese market: "Muss Ja: the German Way of Being"

@Webboy998 @SimiBGood lol I wonder what the transcription into Cantonese or Mandarin of "Chinatown" (chi na ta un?) would mean.

@johnwcbragg @SimiBGood Yes, couple years ago I heard someone opened up a Chinese American restaurant selling General Tso's chicken. Beef and Broccoli etc.

@Webboy998 @SimiBGood (I actually would be surprised if any American "Chinese food" staple were available in China, at least in a form Americans would recognize)

@ayojoestar then at some point they pat themselves on the back, "we made world prosperous" while hoarding unspeakable amount of wealth off-shore and still arguing globalized capitalism being the miracle cure while xenophobia goes rampant at home.

@ayojoestar it's your greedy importers/ big corpos trying to squeeze last penny from Chinese workers and sell the somewhat poorly made stuff to you with a huge markup and turn around blaming Chinese stole your job.

@Webboy998 @SimiBGood 1. we're losing our shit over calling things hot dogs that aren't (Vienna Sausages, Yoder's meats) 2. we're confused at hot dogs (if they are frankfurters, we're now very skeptical) kept in water in a jar.

I've been giving some (serious) thoughts on this specific topic. Ignore my previous somewhat polemics. I was snarky, it kinda struck a nerve being a Chinese descendant living in Europe. Food is almost entirely how I feel connected to my heritage besides having relatives, so when people arguing about packaging and methods of preservation instead of actual content and labeling it as "cultural differences", it's really hilarious and I can't help myself. Then at some point the conversation shift to: "well it's in the water, what the hell, we will only grill it" then again, nobody's gonna prevent you from grilling jarred sausages, just make sure to spill out the water first. If you don't like pre-cooked sausages from jars and cans, there are raw sausages at the meat section that you put on the grill in every single German supermarket, which is what Germans actually eat and do so way more frequently. Then the next "complaint" is more about self-image, how others perceive you. " This is not what we eat back home" well here is the thing. German people that actually cook know that. German people engaging in this conversation know that. It's Americana with German characteristics. It has almost nothing to do with being authentic. It's what's perceived in the collective memory: star-spangled background with French Clarendon font and a bald eagle somewhere. American softpower projection doing its finest work. And also a marketing gag.

I mean, Mrs. Hag being completely oblivious about how Germans actually eat is kinda hilarious. The product is never meant to represent how American actually eats. And US being a gigantic country, to generalize how American is nothing but hyperbole. (It's actually Chinese food though if you believe in statistics.) But you should seek comfort in the fact that American "softpower" projection works perfectly. When food migrates from one place to another, how the people perceive and modify the said food at the receiving end is sadly or fortunately not up to the people exporting it.

@albion_sneed This is a very important point. Europeans and Americans talking past each other. There was something similar happened to Chinese culture in the 18th century. European imitating Chinese art creating something not really Chinese but rather unique, it's called Chinoiserie.

Germany also, for some reason, sells “American hot dogs” in glass jars filled with water? not in the fridge?? i’ve literally never seen them like this in the US ever, this is a German invention.
