The most violent century in human history was the 20th century. The two deadliest conflicts ever were World War 1 and World War 2. Neither was fought in the name of religion. Stalin was atheist. Killed 20 million. Mao was atheist. Killed 45 million. Hitler was not motivated by religion. Killed 6 million Jews. The problem was never religion. The problem has always been power and the humans who want it. Religion is just one of the tools they use. Take it away and they will find another.
