A G20 spotlight on innovative teacher preparation The Teacher Choices in Action module was showcased as a flagship DHET project at the G20 Summit. Developed during COVID-19, it uses guided lesson study to prepare student teachers for deeper school-based learning. Since 2020, more than 80,000 pre-service teachers from 24 universities have completed the course. The module shows how student teachers often focus on routines and behaviour, while overlooking the key decisions teachers make to help learners grasp complex content. Through teaching materials and recorded lessons, it illustrates how real teachers organise knowledge and sequence activities across subjects and grades. Research led by Prof Lee Rusznyak reveals where student teachers successfully connect theory to practice and where gaps remain.
