The file, called weights.bin, is part of Google’s Gemini Nano on-device language model and lands in the browser’s user data folder under OptGuideOnDeviceModel. It powers built-in AI tools such as “Help me write,” smarter tab suggestions, on-device scam detection, and page summarization. The download triggers automatically for devices meeting minimum hardware requirements, and Chrome often replaces the files if deleted. While the model processes data locally, installation happens in the background with minimal notification. The scale is noteworthy. Hundreds of millions or billions of installations add up to thousands of tonnes of carbon emissions globally from data transfer, even though each is a one-time event. To prevent or remove it, go to chrome://flags, disable the entries for the optimization guide on-device model and Prompt API, restart the browser, and manually delete the folder.

#BREAKING A married Chinese national, Xiaodong "Frank" Hu, 38, a Melbourne based immigration agent, committed dozens of rapes and sexual assaults against seven women.
His offending, which resulted in several victims being hospitalised for drug overdoses, was described as "terrifying and extremely serious" by County Court judge Trevor Wraight QC.
One woman whose drink was laced with a cocktail of sedatives and tranquillisers suffered a cardiac arrest and required a three day stay in intensive care.
Many of the women he hired were on student visas, working as administration staff, accountants and translators.
Hu, now 38, took thousands of photos and videos of his attacks, uploading the material to a website featuring unconscious women being raped.
Metadata from Hu's photos linked the offending to 365 Little Collins Street, where he leased offices to run his businesses Lakenest, H&Q Finance and Infinity Education.
Your conduct was cold, calculated and repetitive," the sentencing judge said.
Before jailing him for 29 years.
