Patients can choose to take our advice or the advice of another healthcare provider. At the end of the day, if we did our best to educate on potential risks and they choose to take that risk, it is 100% within their right to do so.

If after all the research, data, experience, testing, everything else and they still want to return to sports in 4-6 months, then there’s nothing left to do. Our job is to utilize the metrics, research and experience to offer our best advice.

Proper return to sport testing is also important as it should show the patient what areas still need improving. This is how we track progress and make decisions regarding returning to jogging, practice and play.

I also explain my goal is to get them back for the LONG TERM and not just the quickest. I tell them about re-tear rates and how my job is to reduce the risk of returning back to sport. The ultimate goal is to never have this happen again.

Patient education is key. I typically express the significant research supports rehabbing longer to help address weaknesses. Additionally, I explain proper return to sport testing is essential. Poor testing gives inaccurate results and gives a false representation of the patient

I received the email on the next slide from a PT. The abbreviated version is he wanted advice on talking to patients/parents when the surgeon clears post-op ACLs between 4-6 months and essentially neglects return to sport testing.

@APH00PS What’s the point in continuously bringing this up? I’m sure you thought it was a reasonable trade at the time. Didn’t work out, the end.

@WesleyWangDPT Yep! I’m trying to get better here! We just got some new equipment in and have more coming in the next few months! My assistant and I love your videos on instagram! I was actually taking some ankle exercises off one of your videos yesterday!

Our field still treats ACLs as if they're simple injuries. While we've certainly moved towards better quality of care, there are truthfully still SO many clinicians who simply don't care about treating ACLs. All of this applies to ATCs as well. We MUST raise the standard.

ACL rehab is extremely complex. If a patient receives poor treatment, they could end up with chronic pain, never return to sports or end up suffering a re-tear, who’s the one that suffers? THE PATIENT. That is why I care so much about promoting high quality ACL rehab.

I wish Lindsey nothing but the best in her recovery. She is an absolute warrior and 1000% earned the right to be out there. Thank you to everyone who has supported me through the years.

I've been through 2 ACL surgeries with 3 additional surgeries since my last ACL surgery. I also treat majority ACL patients. There is no way I would do that. I've spent the past 8+ years using my platform to provide better education on ACLs which I am very passionate about.

Whether or not people agree, I know my true intention and likely could've portrayed that message better in my post. I was in no way trying to capitalize on someone's injury or strictly posting for click bait.

Additionally, my point was to say that non-op IS an option as some people are copers. However, this typically requires longer rehab with testing for return to sport. In short, not rushing back to sport after a big knee injury to minimize risk of another injury.

Some said that nobody would compare themselves to her situation which I don't agree with. To this day, people still bring up Adrian Peterson on why they can return to sport early following ACL surgery. People look up to these athletes and some will follow their lead.

My point of the post was to show that this was a VERY unique situation. Even though it doesn't seem like her ACL played a role in her newest injury, I felt there was POTENTIALLY some risk due to her ACL tear being so recent. Again, I never questioned her decision, 100% her right

My post, which has been deleted, got mixed comments with some people questioning my integrity and intention. To be perfectly clear, at no point did I ever question her choice, determination or even hinted that she didn't deserve her spot. She 100% deserved to be out there.

I know I don't necessarily need to do this but felt compelled to. I was wrong about Lindsey Vonn and her injury. Based on her own words, her ACL tear had nothing to do with her most recent injury. I had commented that the new injury was likely due to the ACL which was incorrect.

Social media is FILLED with clinicians, trainers, wannabe clinicians blaming the VMO for knee pain. They’ll show fancy exercises and say “do these exercises to build up your VMO and eliminate your knee pain!”
