I think one of the biggest lies I told myself for years was that I just needed to be “better” before I could start. Better looking. Leaner. More disciplined. Better at makeup. Better at posing. Better at photography. Better at editing. If I could just reach some imaginary “acceptable” level first, then I’d finally feel comfortable putting myself out there. So I would plan everything obsessively in my head, the perfect cosplay, the perfect physique, the perfect photoshoot, the perfect lighting setup, the perfect edit. And because it wasn’t perfect yet, I’d delay it. “I’ll do it once I lose a bit more weight.” “I’ll post when my skin looks better.” “I’ll shoot when I find the perfect location.” “I’ll upload when the video is flawless.” On the surface it sounds like discipline, but in reality it was just perfectionism mixed with anxiety. The weird part about perfectionism is that it disguises itself as high standards. You tell yourself you just “care about quality.” But what it actually does is paralyze you. You spend so much time imagining the perfect end result that the gap between where you are and where you think you should be becomes terrifying. And when that gap feels too big, your brain does this funny thing where it tries to protect you from failing publicly by convincing you not to start at all. I’ve struggled with anxiety for a long time, and one of the ways it shows up is this constant feeling that whatever I’m doing isn’t good enough yet. Even when things are objectively fine. Even when people say they like it. My brain always goes straight to: “Yeah, but it could be better.” “People will notice the flaws.” “You should wait until you improve more.” And when you combine that with content creation, cosplay, and photography, things where you literally put your appearance on the internet for everyone to judge. That voice can get really loud. But the truth I’ve slowly had to learn (and I’m still learning it) is that the people who look amazing in cosplay, photoshoots, or even just in general didn’t start there. They just started earlier. They took the awkward photos. They did the messy makeup attempts. They wore the slightly-wrong wigs. They posted pictures they weren’t fully confident in. They went through dozens or hundreds of iterations before they became the version of themselves you see now. Your physique improves through boring consistency. Your confidence improves through repeated exposure. Your photography improves by taking a ridiculous number of bad photos. Your posing improves by feeling awkward in front of the camera over and over again until it eventually feels normal. There isn’t some magical moment where you suddenly become “ready.” The readiness comes after you start. Something I’m realizing recently is that the version of yourself you’re imagining, the one who is confident, photogenic, comfortable in cosplay, comfortable in their own body, that person only exists because they went through the uncomfortable phase first. They posted when they felt cringe. They showed up when they were anxious. They kept going even when their brain kept telling them they weren’t good enough yet. I’m saying all this not as someone who has it fully figured out, but as someone who still fights this constantly. I still overthink photoshoots. I still get anxious before posting things. I still look at my work and see all the flaws first. But every time I actually push through and do the thing anyway, I realize something important: most of the progress in my life only happened because I stopped waiting for the perfect version of myself to appear. So if you’re someone who wants to look better physically, get into cosplay, start taking photos, or just feel a bit more confident in your own skin, don’t wait until you become the “final version” of yourself. That version isn’t the starting point. That version is the result of hundreds of imperfect attempts stacked on top of each other. You don’t become confident and then start. Remember, you have to look like poop before the amazing you comes in.
