People in this country often talk about elite capture. Elite capture stems from a ruling class, and small set of cronies whose existence depends on the patronage from the elite. Colonial forces, kingdoms, autocratic rulers create and thrive because of this elite capture. Once such system is in place, the elite has so many resources and power at their disposal that it’s almost impossible to undo it. History has shown that undoing such a system rarely happens peacefully, often needing revolutions, independence movements, war, bloodshed … The only other way to change that, as the west learned over several centuries, is a democratic system, where a peaceful process of election can transfer power to the common man. I feel that Pakistan is also at such a precipice. We cannot progress without undoing the elite capture, one way or the other …
