@DavidDeutschOxf I see what you mean. I hope Ukraine will win, in the sense survive as a country and stop further Russian aggression. But I don't think that's realistic without a massive increase in military engagement from the US and other NATO countries. Not likely...

@WhigLiberal No. "Ukraine won't win" is a statement that could be true or false. "Ukraine can't win" is shorthand for a deep conspiracy theory whose implicit explanations are all things like "but Zelenskyy doesn't know; only his puppeteers do" or "he knows but wants more mansions in Florida".

Pitifully few, on all sides, realise it's the same war, for the same stakes.

@DavidDeutschOxf Although the statement "Ukraine can't win" may be the expression of a conspiracy theory, it may also be an honest conclusion of the country's realistic chances to win.

The outcome of neither war is knowable, especially to us people without access to sophisticated inside knowledge.
