His statesmanship reached its zenith during the 1999 PDP primaries; despite being the party's founding father and feeling shortchanged by a process many believed was marred by irregularities and establishment interference, he accepted the outcome with equanimity. By refusing to incite his followers or destabilise the fragile transition, he placed the survival of Nigerian democracy above his own lifelong ambition, cementing his reputation as a man without bitterness who prioritised national unity over personal gain.
