To cut imports 30-50% (real impact via year-round local tomatoes/cucumbers/lettuce), scaling ~200-500 extra ha could need $500M-$2B total capital (modern high-tech ~$2M-$5M/ha, offset by cheap natural gas heating). Phased private investment + incentives would drive competition, lower retail costs & food security.

Alberta's already acting on this. The $10M Growing Greenhouses program (launched Dec 2025) funds new/expanded commercial greenhouses & vertical farms for year-round local produce, targeting the ~$349M annual fresh fruit/veg imports. Alberta's cheap natural gas powers efficient heating, making it viable despite winters. More local supply chains + warehousing could pressure the retail oligopoly (top 5 chains hold ~80% Canadian market share) and cut costs via competition & shorter hauls. Smart for food security & lower prices.
