As former HUD Sec Castro writes: The [rule's] consequences are far-reaching and profound…Policymakers should instead focus their attention on policies that expand housing opportunities. usatoday.com/story/opinion/…

My new paper details how the Trump Admin is pushing policies that 1) take assistance away while making housing *less*affordable and 2) punish people who become homeless because they can’t afford rent. cbpp.org/research/housi…

This budget would severely undercut the most effective policies to help people afford stable housing, at a time when we should be expanding them to address unmet needs. cbpp.org/research/housi…

~200K formerly homeless people could lose their homes under this budget, b/c it would end HUD’s largest homelessness program (Continuum of Care), and move funds (with cuts) to another program that *can’t* be used for permanent supportive housing—a key evidenced-based solution.

The proposals have some exemptions, including for households where the head or the head’s spouse is a senior or has a disability, but experience with work requirements in other programs suggests people who should be exempt could still lose assistance. cbpp.org/health/comment…

The Trump Administration took another step today that will make it harder for people to afford housing: HUD proposed a rule allowing housing agencies & owners to take rental assistance away from families who reach arbitrary time limits or can’t meet rigid work requirements.

If we really want to address the housing affordability crisis, we need a comprehensive strategy that builds more homes & expands rental assistance so that people who need help paying the rent aren’t placed on years-long waiting lists. #CBPPSOTU cbpp.org/blog/our-respo…

When President Trump talks about making housing more affordable, it’s important to remember he’s done one thing after another this year to make it harder for people to afford housing. #CBPPSOTU cbpp.org/research/pover…

The proposal also adds alarming new requirements for anyone applying for rental assistance, such as having data shared with Dept. of Homeland Security (which raises privacy concerns) & adding red tape that’d be particularly difficult for people who have experienced homelessness.

As people across the country struggle to afford housing, HUD proposed a rule today that would force 20,000 families with mixed immigration statuses to choose between losing the assistance that helps them pay rent every month or separating their family.
