This week's Technique Tuesday examines a style that's based on smooth textures and clean practical lines with no frills .
Our base prompt looks like this :

Purism arrived in the early 20th century like a deep, clarifying breath: cool and calm after the frenetic energy of Cubism. Where Cubism shattered the visible world into shards and splintered viewpoints, Purism gathered the pieces gently, smoothing them into quiet order. It wasn’t a rejection of modernity; if anything, it was a love letter to it. Amédée Ozenfant and Le Corbusier, its guiding founders, envisioned an art suited for a new mechanical age. One that embraced industry yet remained thoughtful, harmonious, almost meditative.
In Purist works, everyday objects step into the light like honored guests: a bottle, a violin, a coffee pot. They’re pared down to their purest forms: curves and cylinders, planes and shadows; no fuss, no flourish, nothing unnecessary. Colors are soft, measured as though mixed with deliberation. A Purist painting feels like a still life that has exhaled, freed from ornament and chatter, leaving only structure, proportion, and quiet truth.
There’s a contemplative beauty in that restraint. Purism suggests that clarity is not cold but human. That a machine, perfectly built, is as poetic as a cathedral. That modern life doesn’t have to be chaotic; it can be precise, clean, and dignified, shaped with intention rather than excess. In its hands, the ordinary becomes almost sacred.
Look closely and you’ll see its fingerprints everywhere today: the elegant curve of a chair, the clean lines of architecture, the understated grace of good design. Purism is the art of essentials; of saying only what matters, and saying it well.
