An Abstract Illusion - The Sleeping City (2025) - a three-piece from the frostbitten north of Sweden who have spent the last decade quietly forging one of the most unhinged, ambitious sounds in modern progressive death metal. On their third full-length they finally drop the mask: this is 70 minutes of pure, uncut technical ecstasy that refuses to sit still for even ten seconds.
The album detonates from the first riff of “The Sleeping City I: Awaken” and never lets up. Blistering blast-beats collide with swirling synth walls that genuinely sound like John Carpenter got lost in a wind tunnel full of Dimmu Borgir keyboards. The guitars are a nonstop assault of sweep-picked arpeggios, odd-meter chug riffs, and melodic leads that twist like DNA strands. Every instrument is playing at 110 % the whole time, yet somehow it never collapses into wankery; the chaos is meticulously sculpted, every fill and key change locked in with surgical precision. The drummer deserves his own paragraph: the man is an absolute monster, flipping between gravity blasts, polyrhythmic skank beats, and jazzy cymbal work so fluid you’ll swear there are two kits in the room.
Under all the virtuosity hides real atmosphere. Tracks like “The Sleeping City II: Slumber” and the colossal closer “Eternal Dream” drop into haunting, almost post-rock lulls where clean guitars shimmer against analog synth pulses that absolutely drip Stranger Things nostalgia, only to explode back into hyper-speed death metal without warning. Vocally it’s the full buffet: guttural roars, blackened shrieks, and soaring clean harmonies that feel like Opeth on a triple espresso. The production is massive yet crystalline; you can hear every ghost note on the ride bell while the low-end still threatens to peel paint.
Look, this is not background music. The Sleeping City demands headphones, volume, and your undivided attention. Casual listeners will tap out by track three. But if you live for the moment when technical death metal transcends sport and becomes genuine art, if you want your face melted and your heart unexpectedly moved in the same song, this record is a revelation.
Near-masterpiece. Essential for anyone who thinks they’ve heard everything prog metal can do. Play it loud at 2 a.m. when the world feels too small and you need something enormous to remind you what extremities human beings are capable of. An Abstract Illusion just redrew the map.
