Pakistan appears to have taken a step back, adopting a "wait-and-watch" approach following the renewed hostilities between Iran and the United States. The two sides continue to exchange strikes with little sign that diplomacy is back on the agenda. Although Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is travelling to Doha, ostensibly to offer condolences over the passing of Qatar's former Amir, Islamabad, for the first time since the crisis began, is not playing an active diplomatic role. The reason is simple: Pakistan is deeply frustrated that months of painstaking efforts to halt the conflict have effectively been undone by the latest escalation. The thinking in Islamabad is that if both Washington and Tehran believe the military option can deliver a solution, they should be allowed to test that assumption. When they eventually conclude that force alone cannot resolve the crisis and decide to return to diplomacy, Pakistan will once again be ready to extend a helping hand.
