Dear friends, after many wonderful years in the U.S., it’s time for a new adventure. My lab and I are moving to the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the @Cambridge_Uni starting April 2026.
If you’re in the UK, come say hi. If you’re not, come visit 🙂

Nature research paper: Precancerous niche remodelling dictates nascent tumour persistence

Today in Istanbul, the trial of 402 defendants begins, including the city’s mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, one of the leading figures of the Turkish opposition.
With a 3,900-page indictment, severe restrictions on lawyers and journalists, and a ban on demonstrations, İmamoğlu’s real “crime” appears to be leading in the polls and representing a democratic alternative to President Erdoğan.
When justice becomes a political weapon, democracy itself is being dismantled.

Wild stuff. Amazing finding!!! Protocadherin locus methylation can be a ubiquitous clonal barcode!!! Congrats to @jrblundell and colleagues!!!
Jamie Blundell@jrblundell
In 1999, Tom Maniatis discovered something remarkable: neurons achieve self-avoidance via stochastic methylation of the protocadherin gene cluster. We've just discovered this locus is an evolvable in-vivo barcode across the human tissues: biorxiv.org/cgi/content/sh… 🧵

I am loving the way journals - finally having to face their irrelevancy - are grasping for salvation by touting their corporeality as an antidote to AI.
From @ScienceMagazine "We at Science try to keep calm and carry on in contributing to a robust, human-curated research literature that will stand the test of time" (1)
From @Dev_journal "When you see a Development paper on the CV of an applicant, whether that's a postdoc candidate or faculty candidate, you know it is high-quality, trustworthy work that has been assessed and commended by the field." (2)
Unfortunately for them (and fortunately for everyone else) publishers' years of refusing to modernize the process even one scintilla is finally catching up to them. The writing is on the wall. AI - for all its flaws - is showing just how retrograde and meaningless the peer review process really is.
The only real question left is whether these EICs will stick around to write their journals' obituaries.

Fun fact.
Finnish students attend school for only about 4 to 5 hours a day, enjoy 15-minute breaks after every lesson, and yet consistently rank among the top in global education assessments like the OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA).
Shorter school days, minimal homework, and frequent breaks are designed to reduce stress, foster curiosity, and allow students time for rest, play, and personal interests.
Play, outdoor activities, and mental well-being are deeply integrated into the school culture. This relaxed but effective model nurtures curiosity rather than stress, helping students retain information better and enjoy the process of learning.

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT📣: I haven’t been this excited to be part of something new in 15 years… Thrilled to reveal the passion project I’ve been working on for the past year and a half!🙀🥳 It started from my frustration with the depressing effect that the current publishing system has on the well-being of myself, my team, and pretty much every scientist I know (maybe you’ve noticed from my stupid jokes… :) I was exhausted of dealing with the huge delays, reviewers that can be abusive, and how arbitrary it all is. Unfortunately, the most important factors are often WHO your reviewers are and who YOU are... It’s clear we need alternatives or at least ways to improve the situation. So, together with a really special and talented team we worked to develop this idea into “qed” a platform where you can get CONSTRUCTIVE feedback on your own work or CRITICALLY assess other people’s papers. It can be a real difference maker if many of you join us (thousands have tried it already, but today we release a NEW and much stronger version ;) Let’s harness qed to put the power back in the scientists’ hands, to do, to read & to publish science on our own terms. I’m dying for you to TRY IT, and it’s very simple - just drop a paper (the link to the website is in the replies👇) - it’s completely secure, private, and free, and you get results fast. Please show your support, SHARE, tell your friends, and let’s be the revolution 🫵!

@Anastasia7882 @EnderElohim @EmreKhansDen Very unmature discussion. Same food different interpretations. We should all eat and celebrate about cultural exchange. No need unnecessary nationalism.

@EnderElohim @EmreKhansDen Of course they ate things they could find.
I don’t show a photo. It’s the word you should read about.
