Hello, new followers & profile-peepers. I’m Matthew Fenton, indie consultant since 1997 & the guy behind Winning Solo. What’s Winning Solo about? This little thread will tell you. To put a face to the logo, here I am hard at work in Copenhagen, maybe my favorite city, in 2019:

Do work that’s remarkable enough to get you hired and referred. Why? Because that’s the easiest sale you’ll ever close says Matthew Fenton @WinningSolo buff.ly/XlzKUDj

Some of the sweetest words a freelancer or consultant can hear: "We're not shopping around - we want to work only with you." This only happens when you're known as an authority at what you do. So always build authority, in your marketing and your deliverables.

@jessekoepke Only that you'll never get it if you don't ask for it! If that's your starting point, you may end up agreeing on a small discount for up-front payment, or a 70/30 split at beginning and end, neither of which are terrible outcomes.

@WinningSolo You’re too kind! Anything you would add, particularly about the 100% payment up front?

@EQuotah Good clients definitely do! And fortunately, it's not so surprising, at least in my experience. For every BigCo that pays on 90 days or more, there's a company that understands the importance of structuring payments and making them on time.

@KimScaravelli Up until they removed analytics, I was tracking my impressions per follower, and it was down over 90% under new ownership. So it's not just you. The freelance community is almost entirely gone. I'm keeping my handle for the same reasons you are, but stopping by much less often.

I'd say my favorite thing about having a home-based business is that my printer is either "almost out of ink" or "completely out of ink," always

A guy once contacted me *years* after I spoke at a lunch-n-learn, looking to engage my services. The long game is about steadily planting seeds, with the knowledge that you can't control how quickly they sprout.
Michelle Garrett | B2B PR Consultant/Writer@PRisUs

In consulting, it's the long game that matters. Case in point: About 13 mos ago, someone needing a B2B PR consultant working w/ industrial clients found me on LI. We had a good conversation. We kept in touch. We're getting ready to kick off their PR efforts. 13 months later.
