(4/5) As lawyers, we take an oath to use the law to bring about a more perfect union. We should use our privileged position to inform, to educate and to encourage others to be empathetic. We should reject rigid dichotomies that lead to dehumanization and demonization.

John Gross is a clinical associate professor and director of the Public Defender Project at University of Wisconsin Law School. Below are highlights from his speech during the 2026 Hooding Ceremony:

(2/3) I am deeply grateful for all the professors, J.D. students and student organizations who have cared deeply about us and helped us along the way. But the most important support comes from ourselves.
