A promising step toward more accessible metabolic monitoring 🧪🌍 A recent study describes a rapid, low-cost colorimetric multimetabolite assay for the quantitative measurement of urinary keto acids associated with phenylketonuria (PKU) and maple syrup urine disease (MSUD). Unlike many current approaches that are either qualitative or require specialized laboratory equipment, this method was designed to support simple, at-home monitoring with quantitative readouts in just minutes. This kind of innovation has the potential to make a meaningful difference for individuals and families managing inborn errors of metabolism, particularly in settings where access to advanced metabolic clinics is limited. New breakthrough in colorectal cancer (CRC) diagnostics. We've developed a simple, fast, and affordable colorimetric assay to detect N1, N12-diacetylspermine (DAS) in urine, a key biomarker for CRC. By using recombinant diacetylspermine oxidase (rDAS Ox) and a unique two-column method to concentrate DAS, we can now detect levels as low as <1 μM—a game changer for low-resource settings! This is the first reported enzymatic assay to accurately quantify DAS in urine, offering a quicker, cheaper alternative to traditional methods.
