After a great deal of thought, we have taken the decision to migrate over to Bluesky. This account will remain open for now, but please do come and find us (and our intriguing research updates) elsewhere!

Nearly three years later, the Seven County Witch Hunt Project is almost at an end. In this penultimate blog, @witchesetc celebrates the people, communities and archives who have brought witchcraft history to life. Thank you all for the journey❤️ @Witches7Hunt/peace-the-charms-wound-up-108db7d9ac68" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">medium.com/@Witches7Hunt/…

🎃OCTOBER BLOG 🎃 Following a trip to Cambridgeshire, @MagicNotWitches ponders the connection between the 1640s witch trials and the Fen drainage projects a decade before 👇 @Witches7Hunt/the-fenland-witch-trials-43931b4fa278" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">medium.com/@Witches7Hunt/…

Stupid first tweet deleted itself. FIRST STOP: Sutton-in-the-Isle Sutton was the home of 4 people accused of witchcraft in the 1640s: Bridget and John Bonham, Margaret Moore, and William Watson. Even pre-drainage, sat on a rare hill Sutton dominated the landscape.

Sutton was known for its orchards in the early modern period. Indeed, John Bonham confessed to meeting the Devil in the shape of a mole in a Sutton cherry orchard. The relative wealth and stable ground in the village might explain why the 14th C church is so impressive

I'm in the Fens this week for a book talk at @ToppingsEly, and to research the accused witches of 1640s Cambs. Yesterday I went to Wicken Fen to see what Fenland might have been like pre-drainage. Today I'm going to the villages where accused witches lived. Watch this space!

Assize depositions can be intense, especially when they're about something as fraught as witchcraft. It was a relief to stumble on this case of a missing hat, where the suspected thief coyly said 'it might be he had [the hat] about him & wishes the company to search him'

A rare example of an actively helpful record! Trying to trace the family tree of accused witch William Watson. The parish clerk has actually noted an in-law that would have been very hard to track down otherwise. Entry reads 'Agneta Jacksone daughter in law to Willm Watsone' <3
