But for real, Star Wars as high culture for people to critique like Mozart has always been insufferable. Star Wars was a popcorn flick built upon a rickety foundation that’s now rotted all the way through. It didn’t survive 50 years as a cultural touchstone, let alone 200.

How did the Looney Tunes writers assume their audience would get Of Mice and Men references? Was a movie adaptation really popular, or was Steinbeck a lot more widely read back then?

This "encounter with Eldricth monster who induces terrors of madness" that is overcome with "primordial ancestral fury that lies dormant in the human mind" really is an extremely potent creative idea. You can still, in modern times, create an entire series of entertaining fictional media by just playing those ideas and their attendant tropes completely straight. You can even just choose to focus on either one of those ideas rather than trying to combine them but combining them is awesome too. Lovecraft and Howard discovered whole new dimensions of the imagination that we have yet to plumb the depths of.
