@AndrewLivingst2 Zardoz is a plain and explicitly-stated refutation of egalitarian utopianism. Zed doesnt destroy them because they are an authority (He becomes a patriarchal authority figure himself), he destroys them because the hippy nonsense they live by is anti-human and evil.

@dawsferatu "Cosmic Horror" is just straight-up not real. Lovecraft wrote extremely traditional gothic fiction, he just happened to do so about 20 years after it was fashionable, making him stand out among his contemporaries.

I love Lovecraft and Howard as much if not more than the next guy, but these posts completely elide the fact that both men were very consciously engaging with long literary traditions. These ideas didn’t come from nowhere, and you do these authors a disservice saying so

This "encounter with Eldricth monster who induces terrors of madness" that is overcome with "primordial ancestral fury that lies dormant in the human mind" really is an extremely potent creative idea. You can still, in modern times, create an entire series of entertaining fictional media by just playing those ideas and their attendant tropes completely straight. You can even just choose to focus on either one of those ideas rather than trying to combine them but combining them is awesome too. Lovecraft and Howard discovered whole new dimensions of the imagination that we have yet to plumb the depths of.
