@shlumpsters But it’s not a democratic system and its official politics hardly reflects Iraqi society very well — there is certainly a lot of antisemitism there but also some warm views toward Iraqi Jews and even Israel — and I am talking about Arab Iraq — KRI is its own story as you gesture

@nianello6 @ScottMGreer The first statement is laughable. The French tried to re-enslave them and the us occupied Haiti for 15 years brutally suppressing opposition. This is a joke. France should pay back every penny it got from Haiti with interest and that still wouldn’t make it true.

@WithPickls @ScottMGreer Nah. When you look at the whole of Haitian history, you find it was actually treated pretty decently by USA and France, on balance. Haiti was never going to make it b/c of Haitians. I'm not blaming them in some moral sense; it was simply a country formed in horrendous conditions.

"200 years ago, France left us a bill for exterminating their people and seizing all their property. We didn't even pay the bill, but it's still why we're so poor!"

@WithPickls @ScottMGreer They didn't even make the first two payments before it was all renegotiating it down from 150 million francs down to 90. Haiti had basically paid off all the much reduced debt by 1875, but due to utter incompetence and corruption w/in Haiti, managed to take until the 1930s.

@karaitequeen My dad was 16 and entering his last year of high school in 1982. When the first Lebanon war started an idiot from his grade declared that they all must drop out and enlist because they are needed now, not later. Didn’t happen but the were all sent to Lebanon at 18. Big difference

@karaitequeen @961Brigades To explain the relationship between Lebanon and Iran? It’s not a bad example and probably the best contemporary one. But there are big differences with regard to the sovereignty of the government and it’s relation to the army within its territory and that’s important

@karaitequeen @961Brigades I don’t think Lebanon is like Belarus. Belarus has sovereignty. It might be Russian sovereignty in a dress and some make up but it exists. In Lebanon it seems like no one is really sovereign and definitely not Iran.

@karaitequeen @961Brigades Look, this seems to have been a well targeted, discriminant attack aimed at legitimate targets and I still read hideous stories about how this managed to traumatise everyone in Lebanon. I really hope there isn’t going to be a third Lebanon war. It will only lead us to the forth.
