Resident Evil Requiem #Review: So many releases later, Capcom are still honing their craft and reminding us why they're still one of the best in the business. Requiem won't win awards for innovation, instead it offers a refined amalgamation of aspects from prior Resident Evil, in an impeccably polished and ludicrously engaging overall package. The first half of the game you'll mostly play as Grace, while the second half is mostly Leon, though it'll switch to and from too. This back and forth balance between the two characters works tremendously well, providing a best of both worlds type package, more diverse in execution and each with different pacing and play. Grace's sections are scary and stunningly atmospheric, slower and more horror and exploration focused, better played in first person camera and filled with jump scares, puzzles and major one hit kill chase monsters. Closer to RE7 and RE2. Grace has drastically limited firepower, ammo and damage resistance, plus her own limited inventory, storage and crafting system. Leon's sections on the other hand are action packed, with more bombastic set pieces and bosses, defaulting to third person and more closely resembleming RE4. Leon can carry a lot more, has far more weapons, plus a whole upgrade system for his entire arsenal, the currency for which is earned through killing enemies. Occasionally they also come together, which can make for some interesting shared world dynamics. For example if Grace has taken all the loot in an area, there's less for Leon, likewise you could leave enemies for Leon, or leave fewer for him if you killed them as Grace. In addition to gunplay and light stealth, there's melee and a melee parry system, which is satisfying and adds some extra skill based reward. There's also sprinkles of nostalgia thrown in throughout the game, as you visit a few old locations and familiar foes, or face new foes that feel mechanically similar, but revamped. Requiem is staggeringly beautiful; easily one of the best looking games ever made. The jaw dropping graphics extenuate immersion, fear factor and general world building. You feel a part of the world and environments more than any RE before it. Each locations is beautifully realised, with an attention to detail that stuns. Though most are quite linear. Gameplay is slick, crunchy and tactile. Everything feels weighty, powerful, violent and extremely rewarding, only more cinematic and realistic than ever. There's still some tankiness and mobility inhibition, but it doesn't detract from fun factor, save for some rare points of restriction. Bosses are on the whole exciting and dramatic. Each mixes things up in style and type from one another, making them more fun. All in all, the game exels in almost every way, being both a nerve wracking horror fest, but also simultaneously an adrenaline pumping spectacle. From start to finish, I loved this game. So then, why am I not giving it a 10/10? As desperately close as I am to giving it a perfect score, there are still a few sore points that prevent it from hitting that illusive perfect score, those being a pretty lacklustre and immensely predictable story (which still has plenty of cinematics pushing it), a few pacing luls in Leons act, plus characters that aren't quite as memorable as RE4. Despite already being a strong start to the year gaming wise, Requiem is not only so far easily my GOTY, but will no doubt remain a strong contender by years end. 9.5/10. 🔥 #PS5Pro gameplay screenshots. #ResidentEvilReqiuem #PS5
