in malaysia, the typical education pathway is:
1. kindergarten (4-6 years old)
2. primary school (7-12 years old)
3. secondary school (13-17 years old)
4. pre-university (18-19 years old)
- foundation: 1 year
- matriculation: 1-2 years
- STPM: 2 years
5. bachelor’s degree (if without any gap, then people usually start their degrees at 19 years old here) and the duration of study depends on what course you take but the common study duration is 3-4 years (medicine and veterinary programmes generally take longer)
as for me:
i did foundation at 18 for a year after completing secondary school, started my degree at 19 and graduated when i was 23, then started my master’s degree at 24 and am now in my last semester so if all goes well, i’ll graduate at the end of the year at 25!
we have pre-university programmes which aim to prepare us for our bachelor’s degrees and these programmes typically focus on foundational subjects before we move on to more specialised courses in our chosen degree programmes, so we have time to decide what we want to pursue for our bachelor’s degree.
