Right now, in Hospitality, if you are breaking even, you are doing well. Many operators aren't even taking a wage. Jobs are being lost. Tomorrow, they get hit with the Business Rates Increase, just another stealth tax. A reduction in VAT is the only way to resolve this mess.

VAT in line with Europe. Right now the UK hospitality sector is carrying one of the highest VAT burdens in Europe. At 20% it simply does not stack up against the rest of the continent where lower rates support jobs, communities and local economies. Hospitality is closing at a rate of around 6 to 7 businesses every single day. That is pubs, cafés, restaurants and hotels disappearing from our high streets and towns. This is not just about business owners. It is about the 3+ million people who work in hospitality plus the millions more family members and friends connected to the sector. When hospitality struggles whole communities feel it. Cutting VAT in line with Europe would help bring down prices, support jobs, protect high streets and give this vital industry breathing room. There’s precious little experience of business around this socialist government. If this is as reported - and that she also said ‘we don’t need any more restaurants’ - it explains a lot why there policies are such a catastrophe.

Breathtakingly stupid and ignorant statement from the government’s Entrepreneurship Champion. "We don’t need any more restaurants. I’m not anti-hospitality but that’s not where my efforts are." She says. I started my own estate agency business (hardly curing cancer, you might say) in 1992, but the fact we worked harder and charged less meant the established businesses had to do the same or die. This drove down prices and drove up service. Good for consumers and the wider economy. We grew and grew but suffered the same challenges from other new entrants. We had to raise our game constantly. This is also good for workers and new businesses equals new opportunities. Our network ended up with 1000 employees, supported all the families that relied on them and paid millions in tax. This is how competition works (also called the supply side of the economy). We should make it as easy as possible for all sectors to grow as this grows the economy, job opportunities, consumer choice, the tax take and funds our public services. We should value every single entrepreneur/risk-taker who bets their own hard earned money on a new or growing venture.
