@OnePeterFive I submit Communism would fit most of that definition. Religion may typically but does not necessarily apply to matters "after death." The popular definition of religion, e.g. that it relates to deities, may not jibe with what historians or sociologists would consider "religious."

It is actually a bit difficult to pin down, as the word 'religion,' used as an abstract term to describe a system of belief, only entered the vernacular in the 13th century AD (~1200s) as religioun (in English). The English word came from Old French religion (piety, devotion) and ultimately from the Latin religiō. In classical Latin, this word has two proposed roots: religare (to bind or tie) and relegere (to consider or ponder carefully). The modern definition is: 'A structured system of beliefs, practices, rituals, moral codes, and worldviews that connects human beings to the sacred, the divine, the transcendent, or ultimate reality. It typically addresses fundamental questions about existence, purpose, morality, suffering, and what happens after death.' So, in the narrow (precise) sense, it is more accurately described as a pseudo-religion; while in a broader (loose) sense, Communism can be thought of as an erroneous religion. What say you?"

@mattyglesias The question lurking behind this is if comparable myths exist in other cultures, e.g. sub-Saharan Africa, to feature black actors. If not, then the cultural heritage of blacks is 'Euro-American' and they will have to decide if they want to be excluded for 'historical fidelity.'

When you see a Black actor cast to play a character described as fair-haired in an ancient epic poem, there's a clear agenda at work — an agenda to claim canonical works as the common patrimony of the entire West, and that's good! slowboring.com/p/a-diverse-od…

Since Vatican II the Catholic Church has been in the most radical, revolutionary period in its history. The long story of Catholic teaching is one of gradual accretion and addition. Now the trend is toward reducing, changing or dismantling age-old doctrines.

Harrison Ford: “Humanity is a part of nature, not above it. We need cultural change. We need to extend social justice. We need to respect and elevate the indigenous people that are being marginalized, and in many cases, killed in cold blood. The world you’re stepping into, the world my generation left you, is a real mess”

“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. @MattWalshBlog We must face the possibility that our civilization is exhausted. The 20th century was one of massive deconstruction--artistically, politically, philosophically, theologically. After that cultural wrecking crew, what is left, and whither can we go?

Every decade in modern American history can be identified and defined by its own style, its own approach to music, film, fashion, its own aesthetic. That seems to have stopped right around 2010. The 2010s don't really have their own unique feel, even in retrospect. The 2020s certainly don't. We're more than halfway through the decade. What are the movies, music, style, and trends that this decade will be remembered for? It's like we fell into some kind of cultural blackhole 15 years ago.

@poperespecter1 Nonsense. Orthodoxy is as much of the original Church as Rome. In fact, churches of the East, e.g. Jerusalem, were older. And "unbroken" is debatable, especially since Vatican II.

Catholicism is the original church. Orthodoxy developed between the 5th and 9th centuries. Protestantism in the 16th. Only Rome is built on the bones of St. Peter and holds his faith unbroken.

@roddreher I'm afraid he might want to brace himself. "Breaks with Catholic teaching" are becoming increasingly possible, maybe even likely. They have already occurred with capital punishment, the Just War and 'extra ecclesiam nulla salus.'

@FrMatthewLC Very challenging to equate a batch of non-thinking, non-feeling, non-conscious cells with the reality of a human being. Shouldn't we be asking what qualities make actual human beings valuable? Has to be more than prizing a bunch of tissue.

@HwsEleutheroi The Church of Rome, almost from the beginning, and definitely before 200 AD (which is an arbitrary cut-off), was held to have special prominence, e.g. I Clement, Ignatius, Irenaeus, etc. And you have yet to demonstrate why 'development' is not theologically legitimate.

@Protestia Not too surprising. Non-believers have said this for years. Modern society does not have the same mindset of ancient concepts of sacrifice. If you take Jesus out of that context, His life and death become more problematic.

"I do not believe Christ died for our sin....I don't live in a sacrificial culture anymore... When people are like 'I'm just moved by the idea that Jesus died for our sins'- I'm not. I don't even understand the sacrifical system." 'Pastor' of Vinnings Lake Church is too honest.

@Kevin_P_Eisert The whole Protestant concept of 'sola scriptura' is really quite daft. John wrote that the whole world could not contain the life of Christ (John 21:25). So why do you imagine that everything Jesus taught just happened to fit into 4 gospels and a bunch of ad hoc letters of Paul?
