I missed the last train in Seoul once. Phone at 3%. Didn’t speak Korean. It was raining, freezing, and I had no idea where I was supposed to go. I tried calling an Uber but my card kept failing because of my bank fraud protection. Perfect timing. I was standing outside the station looking completely defeated when this older woman walked up to me and started speaking Korean. I told her I didn’t understand. She pulled out her phone translator and typed:“You are lost?” I nodded. She asked where I was staying, looked at the address, then motioned for me to follow her. This woman walked me almost 15 minutes through side streets, holding her umbrella over both of us while I apologized every thirty seconds. When we got to my hotel, I tried offering her cash for helping me. She looked genuinely offended. Typed into the translator again:“If my son was lost somewhere, I hope someone helps him too.” Then she bowed and walked away in the rain before I could even process what happened. Some places still treat strangers like human beings first.

PM Carney on the Americans calling the alcohol ban an irritant: "You know what's an irritant? 50% tariffs on steel. 50% tariffs on aluminum. 25% tariffs on automobiles. All the tariffs on forest products. Those are more than irritants, those are violations of our trade deal."

Chantal Hébert: I fail to see how someone who was rejected for PM called Andrew Scheer should be the regular points person [for the Conservative Party]. Bruce Anderson: It's the single worst choice that [Pierre Poilievre] makes every day is to have Andrew Scheer out there.

Johnny Somali's entire career was jurisdictional arbitrage. Do things that would get you arrested in Tokyo, Seoul, or Jerusalem but not in Phoenix. Stream the outrage in real time. Let YouTube ads print money on the reaction cycle. Fly home before the local system catches up. The business model worked for three years. Japan 2023. Israel 2024. Then Korea, where they indicted him in 2024 and took his passport. His defense in court was the business model spoken aloud. He told the judge that having grown up in America, he did not realize his conduct would be illegal in Korea. The argument was that his product mix should not generate prison time in any rational system. He pleaded guilty to the public disturbance counts, the obstruction-of-business counts, and the statue desecration. He apologized for those. The charge he fought was the sexual deepfake distribution. Korea prosecutes that under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes. He lost on every count. Prosecution asked for three years hard labor. The judge handed down six months hard labor, 20 days additional detention, a five-year ban from any institution working with minors or the disabled, offender registration, and phone confiscation for the duration of the sentence. The judge's sentencing statement is the part to actually read. He said Somali had repeatedly committed crimes against the public to generate YouTube profits, distributing the content in disregard of Korean law. The court prosecuted the business model as the offense. The crimes were the content. The content was the revenue. The revenue was the motive. Every element chained back to running provocation streams as a commercial product, and the court said so on the record. This is the first major test of what happens when nuisance streaming meets a criminal system that treats the stream itself as an aggravating factor. Every creator whose monetization depends on filmed confrontations in public just watched a country confiscate the phone and mark the streamer as a convict.

Johnny Somali has been found guilty of all charges in South Korea and has been sentenced to prison with labor
