♟️ Remembering a chess legend on his birthday. Today we celebrate the legacy of Bobby Fischer (1943–2008), the 11th World Champion whose brilliance transformed the chess world. In 1972, Fischer defeated Boris Spassky in the historic 1972 World Chess Championship—a match that captivated the world and helped spark a chess boom across the United States. A prodigy from a young age, Fischer became the youngest U.S. Champion in 1957/58 and went on to win all eight U.S. Chess Championship tournaments he entered—scoring a perfect 11–0 in the 1963/64 event. His 20 consecutive wins in World Championship qualifying play remain one of the most remarkable streaks in chess history. Beyond the board, Fischer also left a lasting mark on chess literature with his classic book My 60 Memorable Games, still studied by players today. Though his life and career were complex, Fischer’s achievements forever changed the game and inspired generations of players. ♟️ Inducted into the U.S. Chess Hall of Fame (1986) and World Chess Hall of Fame (2001). #BobbyFischer #WorldChessHallOfFame

We are saddened to learn of the passing of Jan Timman (1951–2026), a true pillar of Dutch and international chess. ♟️ A multiple-time Candidates qualifier, he faced Anatoly Karpov for the 1993 FIDE World Championship and captured major titles including the 1985 Taxco Interzonal and Linares 1988. In 2025, he was inducted into the World Chess Hall of Fame in Saint Louis, honoring a lifetime devoted to the game. An outstanding writer and longtime contributor to New In Chess, Timman’s legacy will continue to inspire generations.
