Composition conceptualised: Why is it important for teachers to have a productive conception of composition? 👇 writing4pleasure.com/2025/07/25/com…

@Renlovesfungus Knowing basic grammar is fine but it is not how to teach writing. That is about teaching composition and effect - thinking and composing like a writer. Most writing sessions confuse children by grammatical terms rather than anything about composition.

Teaching grammar: our viewpoint “The moment you engage in conversation with learners about writing, being a writer and their specific compositions, you will be talking about and teaching grammar. We teach grammar without even realising…” 👇 writing4pleasure.com/2021/02/13/tea…

Primary writing on England is taught round applying grammar rather than composition and effect… children bung in grammar rather than creating an effect. It makes writing dull. A stronger link with reading helps and shared composition. Being writers.

We say "write a story about a time you were brave" and call it "student-centred". But for a child with limited vocabulary, limited reading, and limited models of how written language works, this doesn't feel like freedom. It feels like being asked a question you don't have the knowledge to answer, in public, every day.

The student who can't write a coherent paragraph about photosynthesis doesn't have a "paragraph structure" problem; they have a photosynthesis problem.🧵⤵️

When Joan Didion said "I write entirely to find out what I'm thinking," she was describing what Bereiter and Scardamalia called "knowledge-transforming"; the act of writing reorganising thought. But she could only discover what she was thinking because she'd spent decades accumulating things to think about.

Importantly, this kills the whole skill VERSUS will debate we are seeing with 'reading for pleasure' this week. Developing your competency can (and absolutely should) be a pleasurable and satisfying thing to do…/1

Writing for pleasure is about attending to children and young people’s “affective needs”. The primary need children identified in our study was feeling a sense of confidence in their ability to write well. routledge.com/Writing-for-Pl…

I love that she did. I love that she has the confidence to put her work alongside published books. I love that she's positioned herself as a writer with an audience. I love that this is going to cause a ripple effect in class. I love that she knows her voice matters.

Our pupil recommendation shelves have been up and running for years. Today, something happened that has never happened before. One of my pupils asked if she could include her writing journal on the shelf because 'I've written some poems I'm really proud of'.

The majority of teachers have no clue how to explicitly teach students to write. Why is nobody talking about this?

@SciInTheMaking I like The Writing Revolution, but I think it is primarily useful as a method of getting pupils to use writing to support their grasp of academic subjects rather than as a writing curriculum in itself (i.e. it supplements, rather than constitutes, effective writing instruction).
