Why Your Skincare Isn’t Working (It’s Probably Not Your Products)
Most people spend a lot on serums and cleansers wondering why their skin still breaks out. The answer is rarely the products… it’s what’s happening inside.
1. Poor Gut Health
Your gut and skin are directly connected through what’s called the gut-skin axis. When digestion is compromised, bloating, irregular bowel movements, poor diet and inflammatory signals travel to the skin, causing breakouts, dullness, and redness. No topical cream can override a gut that’s out of balance.
Start by reducing processed foods, sugar, and alcohol, and consider adding probiotics or fermented foods.
2. Hormonal Imbalance
Persistent breakouts along the chin, jaw, or lower cheeks are almost always hormonal not hygiene-related. Hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and androgens regulate oil production. When they fluctuate (due to your cycle, stress, PCOS, or thyroid issues), skin reacts. Skincare can manage symptoms temporarily, but it cannot correct an internal hormonal imbalance. A dermatologist or endocrinologist is the right starting point.
3. Dehydration
When your body is consistently under hydrated, your skin becomes dry and tight. In response, it overproduces sebum (oil) to compensate which paradoxically leads to oiliness and breakouts. Drinking adequate water (roughly 2–3 litres daily) keeps your skin balanced from the inside out. Moisturiser helps, but it works far better when your body is already hydrated.
