What was planned as a high-stakes military operation quickly turned into a surreal beach spectacle. As the Marines stormed the shores of Beirut in full combat gear, expecting a battlefield, they instead encountered locals sunbathing in bikinis and families eating ice cream. Far from being intimidated, the savvy Lebanese locals—as seen in this iconic photo—watched with curiosity and even started selling sodas and sandwiches to the heavily armed troops as they waded ashore. A serious military intervention instantly transformed into a bizarre tourist attraction on Beirut’s golden sands.
