In America you can tell the level of social trust in any particular area by a curious phenomenon that happens at every shopping center.
Whether or not people return their shopping carts to the cart corral.
In High Trust areas, people return their carts to the corral. There is no reward, there is no punishment, It is simply the right thing to do. It makes an employees life easier and it keeps runaway carts from bumping into other vehicles.
In areas where people do not care about doing the right thing, they will leave their carts strewn across the parking lot.
If you are in an area where nobody returns their shopping cart, do not leave valuables in your vehicle.

As a Japanese person, I never even realized this was something special.
To me, it's just normal.

Japanese fans went to a Walmart in Dallas after the Japan-Netherlands game, and people online started joking that it was “Walmart’s first day without any theft.” From what I saw in the comments, a lot of locals were saying the Japanese crowd was really polite — no fights, no messing around, just calm and orderly. Some even said they wouldn’t mind if they stayed longer. It’s interesting how just behaving normally can stand out that much in certain places.
