1/ Bitcoin's latest post-quantum migration proposal, BIP-361, would freeze quantum-vulnerable addresses once the sunset period starts.
Freezing accounts is not ideal, but if you hold an HD wallet seed phrase, you'll still have a path to recover your funds after the freeze.

Exactly, this is the right take; the algorithms are the easy part. The hard part is everything around them.

Indeed, all blockchains will need a clear transition plan for post-quantum security, and this shift will take time.

This is wild. Google Research demonstrates a ~20x more efficient implementation of Shor's algorithm that could break ECDSA keys within minutes with ~500K physical qubits. Google is now are more confident on a 2029 post-quantum transition. We are no longer looking at mid 2030s, we could have quantum computers of this scale by the end of the decade. They believe this result is so severe that they are not publishing the actual circuits. They instead published a ZKP proving that they know of the quantum circuit with these properties. This is very atypical, showing Google thinks this is serious shit. All blockchains need a transition plan ASAP. Post-quantum is no longer a drill.

🔴Today is a big day for quantum threats against blockchains and crypto!
What @GoogleQuantumAI is showing is pretty concrete:
– ~20x improvement in Shor’s algorithm efficiency
– breaking ECDSA keys potentially in minutes, not months
– ~500K physical qubits to reach that level
– and a 2029 timeline that now looks realistic, not conservative
The gap between “theoretical risk” and “practical attack” is closing fast.
The takeaway is simple:
post-quantum is no longer something you prepare for later.
Systems need to be built so they can transition without breaking; because when this hits, there won’t be time to redesign everything from scratch.
That’s the direction we’re building at @SoundnessLabs.
