A new robust solution to goodness-of-fit (GOF) testing for unnormalized models! Joint work with @fx_briol. ❌Existing kernel GOF tests based on KSD are NOT robust. ✅We introduce a simple, provably robust extension that adds no extra computational cost! arxiv.org/abs/2408.05854

I am stunned and disappointed to see this happen at a top AI conference that claims to value so much about equality and AI ethics... The mention of the race here serves no purpose other than demonstrating the racial bias of the speaker :(
Jiao Sun@sunjiao123sun_

Mitigating racial bias from LLMs is a lot easier than removing it from humans! Can’t believe this happened at the best AI conference @NeurIPSConf We have ethical reviews for authors, but missed it for invited speakers? 😡

What makes this slide even worse is the little trick trying to hedge the language: the speaker first make an offensive quote specifically targeting a particular nationality, then make the note that tries to exempt herself from the responsibility, or equivalently “I didn’t say it, you said it yourself”. It is rather unfortunate to see language technique is used in this way 🙃

1/3 Today, an anecdote shared by an invited speaker at #NeurIPS2024 left many Chinese scholars, myself included, feeling uncomfortable. As a community, I believe we should take a moment to reflect on why such remarks in public discourse can be offensive and harmful.

I'm shocked to see racism happening in academia again, at the best AI conference @NeurIPSConf. Targeting specific ethnic groups to describe misconduct is inappropriate and unacceptable. @NeurIPSConf must take a stand. We call on Rosalind Picard @MIT @medialab to retract and apologize for her statement.

Excited to be at the Bernoulli-IMS World Congress this week, presenting our latest paper on robustness in kernel-based goodness-of-fit testing (coming soon to arXiv) in collaboration with @fx_briol ! If you’re here and want to catch up, let’s connect! @InstMathStat @BernoulliSoc
François-Xavier Briol@fx_briol

@XingLiu97 is at the Bernoulli-IMS World Congress this week and will be presenting a brand new paper (to appear on arXiv shortly) on robustness in goodness-of-fit testing with kernels (at 11:am in room HZO 90). Go say hi to him if you are there too😀. @InstMathStat @BernoulliSoc

What if a generalised posterior / Gibbs measure uses a loss that need to be estimated? This happens often, e.g. for posteriors based on the MMD, beta-divergences, & estimated likelihoods. Me, @dtfraz, & @chris_drovandi answer this in a new paper: arxiv.org/abs/2404.15649

Can't agree more. NeurIPS should reconsider this decision.

@avt_im Always think this kind of things, even though they exist, shouldn't be encouraged, certainly not by a renowned conference like NuerIPS. If unis do then start to take this kind of papers seriously in their application, NeurIPS is contributing to a widening social inequality.

@avt_im Terrible decision for NeurIPS to allow high-school students to submit papers imo. It might make more students who do well in their grades not able to go to top unis just because their family does not have the resources to find/buy them collaborators to write this kind of papers.

The NeurIPS high school track has made its way to Chinese social media. The collaborator who sent me this said there is at least one example of a professor asking their PhD student to help write a paper for one of their kids so that it can help their college admissions abroad.
