De grootste vijand van onze vrijheid zit niet in Moskou of Beijing… Het zit in Brussel. En haar naam is Ursula von der Leyen. Terwijl we denken dat de EU er is om ons te beschermen en samen te werken, trekt zij systematisch meer macht naar zich toe. Nationale regeringen worden aan de kant geschoven. Beslissingen vallen niet meer in de hoofdsteden, maar in haar Berlaymont-kantoor – vaak door een klein kringetje rond haar. Zelfs ex-commissarissen zoals Thierry Breton waarschuwen openlijk voor deze “power grab” en centralisatie.  De EU werd opgericht voor vrede en handel. Vandaag is ze een machine die onze nationale soevereiniteit en democratie langzaam uitholt. Maar waarom ziet de meeste bevolking dit niet (of nog niet)? Omdat de voordelen wél direct zichtbaar zijn: vrije reizen, economische handel, hulp tijdens corona of steun aan Oekraïne. In crisistijden lijkt meer macht in Brussel “nodig” en “sterk leiderschap”. De nadelen zijn trager en abstracter: • Steeds meer regels die onze bedrijven en boeren wurgen • Minder inspraak voor burgers en lidstaten • Macht die verschuift naar één vrouw en haar kabinet, terwijl nationale parlementen worden gemarginaliseerd De mainstream media praten vooral over “sterker Europa” en “eenheid”. Kritiek wordt snel weggezet als “populisme” of “anti-Europees”. De EU voelt voor veel mensen nog als iets positiefs en vertrouwds – status quo bias. En peilingen tonen nog steeds een redelijk positief beeld (rond 60-70% ziet voordelen), omdat mensen de voordelen voelen, maar de geleidelijke erosie van vrijheid niet direct in hun portemonnee of dagelijks leven merken.  Tot het écht raakt: hogere kosten door Brusselse regels, verlies van inspraak bij verkiezingen, of wanneer een nieuwe crisis laat zien dat Brussel niet altijd de oplossing is, maar soms het probleem. Genug ist genug. Tijd om wakker te worden. Tijd om het onderscheid te maken tussen nuttige samenwerking en een Brusselse elite die steeds meer beslist over ons leven. Wie herkent dit patroon? Wie is het beu dat onze landen langzaam hun soevereiniteit verliezen terwijl we “Europa” blijven toejuichen? Deel dit als je vindt dat Europa de naties moet dienen, en niet andersom.
