Youth in Sustainable Aquaculture (YISA) Kenya retweetledi

Homa Bay County has strengthened livelihoods by shifting from overfished capture fisheries to climate-smart aquaculture. With over 200 km of Lake Victoria shoreline, communities had faced declining fish stocks, food insecurity, and income loss due to overfishing and climate change. In response, the County, with partners, has promoted aquaculture as a more reliable and sustainable alternative.
Between 2018 and 2025, over KES 1.5 billion has been invested, leading to more than 1,800 fish ponds and 250 cage units. Innovations such as solar-powered systems, hatcheries, and sustainable fish feed are lowering costs and boosting production. As a result, youth, women, and smallholder farmers are earning more, food security has improved, and communities are becoming more resilient to climate change.
