Joel Sherzer, my dissertation advisor, was hugely influential on the way I think about anthropology, and more specifically, linguistic anthropology. A bit of ethnography of speaking, a touch of ethnopoetics, and a dollop of a discourse-centered approach to language and culture

Charles Frake's work loomed large to me, recommended by my undergraduate advisor, Myrdene Anderson (a student of Conklin, Frake too a Yale PhD), and by my MA advisor, Scott Rushforth (a student of Keith Basso who was a student of Frake at Stanford), and finally by Joel Sherzer

Obviously my MA advisor Scott Rushforth had an important influence on my thinking, these four papers continue to be papers that I teach
