4. Cuts to refugee health care The federal government will scale back health care for refugees, making these especially precarious people, many of whom are working in our health care system, even more vulnerable.

Taken together with Bills C-2 and C-12, this policy signals yet another setback to Canada’s commitment, and legal responsibility, to uphold refugee rights.

Decades of research show that even small copayments can significantly impede access to care, especially for people with limited income. This proposed change will therefore likely have serious consequences for refugees’ and refugee claimants’ health and well-being. #HealthEquity

Canada’s #Budget2025 plans to “introduce a modest co-payment model” to the Interim Federal Health Program (#IFHP) for “supplemental health products or services (such as prescription medication and dental care).” This is effectively a healthcare cut for refugees & asylum seekers.

@YYBrandonChen @nkeung She was denied OHIP coverage because she was self-represented before the Health Services Appeal and Review Board (HSARB). She should have consulted a lawyer who specializes in Statute Law. This was a Statute Law case.

Many thanks to @nkeung for allowing me to reflect on this case. As mentioned in the article, I am concerned about the lack of reciprocity where a resident migrant worker paid into OHIP, through income tax and OHIP premium, but is denied coverage. /1

An #Ontario woman has lost her #OHIP coverage because she's working remotely for an employer that doesn’t have an office in the province, according to a tribunal decision that may affect other #WorkPermit holders here. #TemporaryForeignWorker #RemoteWork thestar.com/news/canada/te…

This understanding of health care, not as a right but as a privilege, goes against the fundamental values of an equal, just, and caring society. #HealthForAll /4

Foremost, it lays bare the instrumentality that underpins migrants' OHIP eligibility. Migrants apparently only "deserve" health care if they benefit our economy in a way that we want them to. Their human dignity and their residency in the province are simply not enough. /3
