That is a question you will answer the most “honestly” when you open your own community pharmacy. As health workers, we have been conditioned to always have this kind of mentality that we are supposed to help people only. That we are not supposed to make money. Instilling in us a form of poverty mentality. This is even common with pharmacists that start their career in the hospital. There is a way it skews your mind to help people. Like you said, “when you see people dejected because of a 3k drug,” there is a way it messes and skews your mind. Based on such experience, and also because you have more inclination to clinical than the transaction part of healthcare in the hospital setting, your brain maps “pharmacy” to “service” and never to “commerce.” But outside, it is not like that. On the fun side, the same people that want us to help them will not reduce the price of jack for us outside. In short, we are supposed to make money. Ethical and legal of course, but make money. Don’t make it an obligation to help patients with price. Pitch the best product. If they agree, voila. If they don’t, give them a substitute. The best product often costs more, and that is not exploitation. THAT IS VALUE!!!!
