Today I discovered a 1903 brochure promoting @theUL’s Chinese collection. It bears the names Professor Wade and Giles, the first two Chinese professors and honorary curators, whose selfless efforts built and preserved our collection, reminding me why safeguarding books matters.

《侨批档案-海外华侨银信》已列入世界记忆名录➡️unesco.org/zh/memory-world

This is my original English edition. During his time at Clare College in the late 1950s, Jonathan Spence was named editor of Varsity in his second year and also served as a co-editor of the literary magazine Granta. He initially studied English before turning to Chinese history.

In the Chinese edition of The Death of Woman Wang, the famous historian Jonathan Spence 史景遷 thanked librarians, and the first library he mentioned was Cambridge University Library. I wondered why, and Professor Roel Sterckx told us that Spence was an alumnus of Clare College.
