Definitely THIS ⬇️. Assumptions and misinformation tied to FND are responsible for so much medically induced PTSD. Which in turn, clouds the diagnosis. And treatment. Especially if attempting to detox from medication prescribed by the same Dr.
Tom Plender@TomPlender

1/Gaining control of #FND symptoms in rehab is challenging and requires a lot of courage and determination on the part of the patient, particularly if they’ve had the condition for many years. Symptoms often flare at the beginning of treatment when a new activity is introduced

Whilst the Government distracts us with small boats its anti strike bill will rob millions of workers of their democratic right to strike, its Elections Act will lock millions out of the electoral process & new laws will strip back our right to protest. UK media must wake up!

@TomPlender Don't apologise for calling out a clumsy and outdated description. The way that this is worded it is almost encouraging ignorance of current research.

4/‘distract attention away from body to normalise Incorrect lay beliefs about the body’, indicative of a kind of patronising & patrician tone we were supposed to have moved on from, term ‘Lay beliefs’ holds the assumption all non doctors are somehow irrational & unscientific

1/When you look at the wording used to describe #FND here you have to ask yourself is it any wonder so many patients reject the diagnosis. I have FND and I accept the diagnosis but I find the way it is portrayed here clumsy, simplistic & insensitive

BMJ Neurology Open invites submissions to its Topic Collection "Advances in Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)". Guest Edited by Wendy Phillips and Mark Edwards, authors benefit from a reduced APC and increased visibility. Find out how to submit: neurologyopen.bmj.com/pages/topic-co… #fnd

Thank you @FNDAction for such a calm & balanced reply. Once again the Medical Establishment find it safer to blame the patient than to accept that maybe, just maybe they are themselves in error.
Tom Plender@TomPlender

@ThinkingMindPod approached us at @fndaction for comment on their recent interview with @Suz_OSullivan. We felt we had a duty to respond to the claims made about FND which have little scientific evidence to support them & could negatively impact patients fndaction.org.uk/fnd-action-res…

@TomPlender Of course it's not. And it's a terrible position to be in. Unfortunately, it is happening time and time again. No-one is prepared to take responsibility. Whilst individuals are more concerned with their own welfare than that of those they treat, I cannot foresee change .

I was diagnosed with #antidepressant withdrawal syndrome several years ago. At times the symptoms have been so severe I considered ending my life. For years I was met with denial by medical professionals and I'm still unable to find any support from the #NHS. Is this acceptable?
Dr James Davies (PhD) 💭@JDaviesPhD

The problem is your doctor is unlikely to be well informed about anti depressant withdrawal. I have been unable to find any support for very complex withdrawal issues, we need de prescribing clinics run by informed experts.
Royal College of Psychiatrists@rcpsych

Following today’s @BBCPanorama ‘The Antidepressant Story’, we advise anyone thinking of stopping their antidepressants to talk to their doctor first. These medications should not be stopped abruptly. See our patient resource here rcpsych.ac.uk/mental-health/…

@emilylinka @TomPlender You aren't alone. It took years for my husband to get off Venlafaxine . But it is worth it. Until it was gone we had underestimated how much of his illness was actually side effects.

@TomPlender Even my psychiatrist was bewildered by how severe my venlafaxine withdrawal was. We currently have to cut my pills as I’m on 17.5mg twice a day and terrified to try stopped again after last time almost cost my life
