People give advice. Not all may apply to you Make it your duty to become empathetic if that's what you truly want. Continue to do things for others from a place of goodness. Your neutral pathways will reconfigure.. The elderly people you worked with. Envision yourself in their position when you reach their age. What injustices do you see them enduring? Uncomfortable bed, poor food, cold or maybe lack of a caring person in their life How can you be the change? How would you feel if someone decided to be the positive in your life when you get there. Do good to others, but have healthy boundaries. As far as the younger generation.. They're pretty effed up, but know that people aren't usually messed up for no reason Generational trauma. Abuse. Genetics. All these, and more, play a part in who people are inclined to be. Unless someone has a degree of humility and can look at themselves honestly; analyzing the undesirable or uncouth bits in their behavior and personality, they will remain stuck and static. Dogmatic. Boneheaded. Unchanging. Develop a set of morals standards. Use that as a mirror of your actions; a guideline of how well you are doing That minimizes the proclivity to seek outside validation

How does one learn empathy? Genuine question.
