I just watched @wode_maya ‘s video on Eritrea, and I have to say, I'm a fan, bro. I've been following your journey since the early days, which makes this one particularly tough for me. Five years for a visa? Check. The most expensive Visa in Africa? Check. Friendly people? Absolutely. No internet? Yep. Villages resembling typical African landscapes? True. But my friend, let me be clear when I say this, your experience was curated. That "tribal harmony" you praised? Staged. That well-organized tour? Crafted by a regime that has maintained an open-air prison since 1993 with ZERO elections. Not one. Never. You mentioned that more Eritreans live abroad than within the country. I need you to pause and reflect on that for a moment. Half a million refugees didn't risk their lives crossing deserts and seas simply because the mangoes are sweet. They fled from indefinite national service, which is just a euphemism for state-sponsored slavery. The first conscripts were taken at 18, and now they're in their 50s, still in uniform, still waiting for a freedom that will never come. And that fate follows every single one who stays. Even we Tigrigna, part of the same tribe, are now divided by regionalism, a strategy purposely engineered by the regime. Divide and conquer, 101. You witnessed what they scripted. And yes, that tomato you tasted fresh from the field? Real. But the oppression, my brother, is even more realer. Wode, you’re better than this. Your platform deserves more depth. Next time, please engage with us, your actual fans in the diaspora. We can share stories about the brilliant engineers rotting in military camps, mothers who haven’t seen their children in 20 years, and friends we’ve lost in the Mediterranean. I love your work, bro. But the country you showcased? It's a beautiful movie set. The real Eritrea lives in the eyes of the 500,000+ who cannot return home. The real Eritrea lives in the mothers who have spent decades waiting for sons and daughters who never came back. @vanessatsehaye @martinplaut @UNHumanRights @hrw @UNGeneva youtu.be/xcqebuWoiPw?is…

"And we came within about 30 minutes of having a war." Israel tried to pressure Barack Obama to launch military strikes on Iran, according to former US secretary of state Antony Blinken, who said Israeli leaders warned they would attack themselves if Washington refused. Obama rejected the push for war, arguing the better approach to Iran’s nuclear program was "very muscular diplomacy" backed by global sanctions rather than immediate military action. Blinken also revealed the US nearly entered another regional war after the October 7 attacks, when Israeli officials gave false information insisting Hezbollah was about to attack from Lebanon and pushed for a pre-emptive strike. According to Blinken, Washington came within about 30 minutes of a new conflict before the situation was halted.

Abiy condemning Iran for “violation of sovereignty, International and UN law” 😄
Addis Standard@addisstandard

News: #PM_Abiy calls #Kuwait Crown Prince, condemns Iran attack as violation of sovereignty Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has held a telephone conversation with Kuwait’s Crown Prince, strongly condemning the recent #Iranian attack and expressing Ethiopia’s solidarity with Kuwait, according to the state-run Kuwait News Agency (KUNA). KUNA reported that Abiy spoke on Sunday with Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, during which the Ethiopian premier denounced what he described as an “atrocious attack” that violated Kuwait’s sovereignty, airspace, and international law, as well as the #UN Charter. Getachew Reda brought out the truth. All theseEthiopians who claim to have been the sea are liars, Masawa never ruled it.He says that in the past 500 years, Ethiopia has occupied only for 30 years 30,after federation with Eritrea. And Haile Selassie overthrew the federation.

Some ask why I keep hitting Eritrea's dictatorship. As a child I suffered under Soviet brutality and my dad was sentenced to death. I know what it's like. My soul hurts for those in similar situations, or have family members in Isaias' Gulag, and must stay silent. It will end!

Sarah Vaughan independent researcher on politics, political economy, governance and conflict, remarks on #Ethiopia to the #EU Six points she focused on: 1. geopolitics #Ethiopias sovereign decision making power is weaker and dependent (on #UAE) #Gulfstate involvement in the region is strong and exacerbated the war in Sudan and Ethiopia #Ethiopia quest for sea access further distablised the regime 2. #Economics it’s becoming more dependent and reforms failed 3. #Domestic politics - ongoing concentration and personalization of power by @Abiy Ahmed and decreasing circles of loyalty 4. Disintegrated state delivery capacity in various social services 5. Ongoing unresolved three major domestic conflicts 6. I’m not sure which version of @reda_getachew I should be responding to 🙂 Anyway, Getcho, you piece basically admits what I have been writing about Abiy’s supposed for RSF. So, are you trying to tell us that Abiy is protecting the national interest by supporting the Janjaweed militia that is committing genocide and dragging us into the Sudanese conflict?

@reda_getachew @Jawar_Mohammed Brother Getachew, you have no moral standing to criticize Jowar. He has demonstrated courage and integrity, remaining loyal to his people, unlike you, who aligned yourself with a genocidal dictator.

Congratulations, brother @Jawar_Mohammed Your persistent conflation of personal opposition to the Prime Minister with a coherent critique of Ethiopia’s long-term strategic interests is remarkable. Disliking the ruling party does not free you from having to distinguish between regime politics and state/national interests. Over the past few days, you — once an ally of the Prime Minister but now a vocal critic — have repeatedly attacked Ethiopia for seeking to protect its strategic interests in the context of the Sudanese conflict. Some of the reports you circulate or the ideas you share may be factually accurate in isolation. Yet, you present them without reference to the broader strategic context shaping Ethiopia’s calculations. Facts, detached from structure and strategy, can easily be marshaled into a misleading narrative.  Do you genuinely believe Ethiopia should behave as a passive bystander in a region defined by intense geopolitical competition? The tragedy unfolding in Sudan is indeed exacerbated by foreign intervention. But Ethiopia is hardly unique in pursuing its interests. In fact, Ethiopia, more than any other country in the region and beyond, stands to lose more as a result of Sudan’s instability. It has a real skin in the game, as it were. Egypt and other regional actors are not neutral mediators; they are actively shaping the trajectory of the conflict to favor their preferred belligerents. You position yourself as a politician–activist, but your posture suggests an aversion to the very language of national security and strategic interest. In a region marked by proxy competition, transboundary security threats, and zero-sum maneuvering among rival states, such discomfort is not a virtue. It is a liability. States do not have the luxury of moral abstraction when core national interests are at stake. Moral posturing in such an environment may be emotionally satisfying, but it is not strategy. Critiquing policy is legitimate. However, presenting every move as evidence of strategic folly simply because it originates from Prime Minister Abiy’s government risks substituting partisan grievance for analysis. More importantly, anyone with aspirations for higher office should be cautious about adopting a scorched-earth posture toward the state itself. While governments change, strategic geography is stubborn. Ethiopia’s long-term national interests are distinct from — and larger than — the party temporarily in power. A credible alternative must demonstrate an ability to separate those two. Thus far, however, you have shown a near-pathological inability to make that distinction.
