In recent weeks, the reception center of the National Public Complaints and Proposals Administration on Yongdingmen West Street in Beijing has been receiving roughly 5,000 visitors a day, all there to submit grievance materials. As China's economic downturn deepens, the absence of the rule of law is taking an ever-greater toll on any sense of social fairness. It is heartbreaking to see ever more “petitioners” lining up day and night, rain or shine, in the hope of being heard.
Rumors suggest that by year's end, the reception center will be relocated to a more remote site near Xingong Station in Fengtai District. Yet pushing victims of injustice out of the public eye does not mean that their cases have been resolved.
