You Can Ride 2

Kids and bikes go together like puppies and squeaker toys, but for many children with disabilities, it's one of those things that seems "impossible". So for day 2 of our #ChristmasWithKenji (and Chesnyy too) Charity Advent Countdown, we'd like to tell you about the You Can Ride 2 program. This is an organization that modifies bikes specifically for kids with disabilities and challenges with coordination. They have over 200 bikes they have modified in various ways that are part of a lending pool that allow these children the opportunity to learn to ride. The program was originally conceptualized by a pediatric physical therapist, and through partnerships with other health professionals, such as occupational therapists, and cycling educators and mechanical experts, it's grown and includes a Learn to Ride program for these kids. They then help parents modify a bike for their child. For kids, bikes mean freedom, physical activity, and community. To be able to join your neighborhood friends or classmates and bike to school or at the park means fitting in and being part of. That makes my heart feel good. So we're making a small donation to this organization. If you're local to Edmonton (looks like they're starting up in New Brunswick as well!) and interested in volunteering, or if you know a child that could benefit from this program, or would like to make a donation, visit youcanride2.ca and give them a follow at @YouCanRide2 Please consider looking into similar programs in your province or state to support. There aren't many, so they could use the extra help. Some of our great followers have reached out to chip in to help us make these donations, so we'd like to give a woof of appreciation. It's day 2 of our annual #CharityAdvent Countdown and today we're going to introduce you to You Can Ride 2. @YouCanRide2 is a program that lends modified bikes to kids with disabilities and has an adapted cycling program so they can safely learn to ride them. They also assist families in modifying their own bikes so kids can continue to use them as they grow. Kids with disabilities want to be able to play with their friends. Unfortunately there's often many barriers that make it hard. Inaccessible play grounds, costs of modified equipment, etc. The freedom a bike can give, along with feeling of being able to just bike with friends, well that sounds like Christmas magic. We're happy we can make a small donation. It's day 5 of our #CharityAdvent Countdown. Tonight were making a small donation to a really cool organization and we are excited to tell you about it. You Can Ride 2 helps kids with disabilities learn to ride bikes and can lend their families modified bikes or if they have a suitable bike, modify it for them! Modifications might include specialty seating or specialty design balance wheels. They also have a special program that teaches kids with coordination or balance issues to safely ride 2 wheel bikes. Bikes are not just how kids get to school. They're an activity they do with friends and family. When kids with disabilities have access to bikes they can use, it let's them get out in the world and be included in kidstuff. That's pretty awesome and feels right. If you want to learn more, follow them @YouCanRide2 or visit their website at youcanride2.ca and if you're a local cyclist, I encourage you to consider volunteering for this organization to help give kids the freedom biking brings! In recognition of National AccessAbility Week & with the start of Bike Month just days away, I wanted to highlight @YouCanRide2, an organization that offers children with disabilities the opportunity to find joy and freedom through movement by reducing barriers to riding a bike!

The 13,000 km Ride for Change has begun! Matt left Halifax, NS this am and has arrived in Charlottetown, PEI. Fundraising in the Atlantic provinces will go to decreasing local barriers to 2-wheel cycling, supporting training and equipment. Follow @devinetransformation on IG!
