For Hogmanay what better than the "Laird of the Halls", Sir Harry Lauder's "Stop Yer Ticklin' Jock!" Look up the lyrics - very saucy! #songsheetsaturday

A couple of Dan Leno Christmas cards from my archive. Produced by Raphael Tuck c1920. (I have a 3rd one with Dan as a postman, but my scanner doesn't work!). These are lovely items. Images are embossed and there are Christmas verses inside. @musichallsoc

At this time of year the cry to "give me a cosy little corner" is going up all over. Is the festive season proving too much? Why not take some time out and look up Clarice Mayne? A panto stalwart, she was connected to anyone who was anyone in the #musichall. #songsheetsaturday

#December1917 There’s no Christmas truce for traditional British pantomime on the bleak Western Front, where a divisional concert party rehearsing a war production of 'Cinderella' ensures the officers playing Cinders and Prince Charming brush up their lines before opening night.

Back in 2018 I went to the London Hippodrome to a viewing of this delightful short film, 'Bombastic Rubbish: The Theatres of Frank Matcham.' Seeing as it's Frank's birthdate today, an excuse to share it: vimeo.com/202799420

Welcome back to Brixton! The new M&S Food Hall store has opened today and I have to say, it was worth the (long) wait! The purpose built Art Deco store has been completely remodelled and it’s lovely to see some of the original features such as the lead-light windows reinstated.

The Camberwell Palace of Varieties opened #OTD 1899 - here is the programme for opening night from our archive. The architect was AE Woodrow who went onto build the Clapham Grand. They also had manager Jesse Sparrow in common #musichall #EYA

#OTD1918 From shells to limelight: War work has ended for our army of women munitions workers. Fortunately a producer is in the Liverpool Echo offering pantomime chorus work for smart unemployed munitions girls age 18-24 who can do 'a little ballroom dancing' for 37s 6d a week.

A house full of staff would obviously be a huge help as well as considerable lengths of ‘dark cretonne’ to knock the curtains into shape.

A kind friend gave me a book he thought I’d like, The Home Entertainer pub. 1939. The chapter on home theatricals has helpful hints for building an open-air theatre in one’s suburban garden on your ‘fair-size lawn’, as well as curtain & stage construction instructions 😳
