In 2006, one of Gunna’s older brothers was killed by gun violence when Gunna was around 13 years old. He dropped out of school after the incident and joined a street gang so he could avenge his brother. At the age of 18, he was arrested and got his first charge for drug related offenses in 2011. After getting out, he realized the street life wasn’t the right path for him, so he decided to fully commit to music. He started rapping as Yung Gunna and dropped his first song in 2012, but after Young Thug signed him in 2016, he changed the name to Young Gunna, then later to just Gunna. In 2022, Young Thug and Gunna were both arrested in the same case. Police said their label, YSL Records, wasn’t just a music label but a street gang involved in crimes. Gunna turned himself in and later got released for doing so. Young Thug cried about it, saying he spent more time with Gunna than with his own kids, only for Gunna to snitch on him. But Young Thug’s lawyer clarified that Gunna never snitched or did anything to harm Thug’s case. Gunna started releasing music again in 2023, and today he’s one of the best rappers in the world.
