MEDIA RELEASE: Young New Zealand First and NZ First Youth MPs say 'Keep it 18' Young New Zealand First is proud to back this year's New Zealand First Youth MPs in rejecting Make It 16's call to lower the voting age. Representatives from all other parties chose to sign an open letter to lower the voting age, however the sensible young kiwis representing New Zealand First MPs said, 'Keep it 18.' Speaking on Make it 16's open letter, YNZF Chair Keegan Langeveld said, "This is a campaign that claims to be politically aware and representative of their entire generation yet they only gathered half of their fellow youth MPs' agreement and couldn't even get the facts right on who had signed in support – releasing a statement claiming members from all parties were supportive despite NZ First Youth MPs outright rejecting it." Members of the New Zealand First Youth MP cohort said they reject the 'Make It 16' campaign and were not surprised almost half of their fellow Youth MPs didn’t support it, citing “immaturity as evident by the walk out during Rt Hon Winston Peters’ Youth MP’s speech” and a “lack of experience’ and ‘following in one’s parents’ footsteps without critical thought.” Young New Zealand First would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the New Zealand First Youth MPs on their selection and commend those who spoke in the House today. “They all displayed courage and embraced sound ideals, with all New Zealand First Youth MPs speaking on unique topics with conviction and passion”, says Langeveld.

That's a wrap on AUT clubs expo! Great two days at South and City campuses, lots of interest from students and some great conversations. Thanks to all our volunteers who helped make it happen.

31 years ago, we launched New Zealand First, today we thank all of our members, volunteers, and supporters who have helped build our party. We built our party on a set of principles, values, and a simple premise - to put New Zealand and New Zealanders first.

Mothers and their newborns deserve proper care. As part of our coalition agreement, we have secured a commitment to ensure proper funding for birthing units and maternity care, including a three day stay for new mothers.

We've invested $24 million in Gumboot Friday so young kiwis can get free counselling sessions.

Winston Peters: We’re fixing the economy and taking back our country

Today we have announced a funding boost to Mike King’s ‘I Am Hope Foundation’ as part of the NZFirst-National coalition agreement. The $24 million over the next four years will give a boost to the already great work his organisation is doing for our youth who desperately need mental health support. We have always supported Mike King and his Gumboot Friday initiative and we have fought to get them the funding they need to deliver to more youth who need help the most. The funding will go direct to the front line and increase his organisation’s support to more than 15,000 young people to access counselling when they need it.

In September 2020 we first pledged to fund Gumboot Friday. Today we have announced, as part of Budget 2024, funding for our commitment to fund I AM HOPE’s Gumboot Friday charity to $6 million per year – for a total of $24 million over four years. Gumboot Friday provides immediate, free counselling to young Kiwis in need, and has provided more than 91,000 sessions since 2019. As @winstonpeters said in 2020 Gumboot Friday “will reduce pressure on publicly funded counselling services and overworked GPs.”

It's time to get our young people back on the escalators of education, so they can go as far as possible in life. As part of our coalition agreement, we pledged to enforce compulsory education and address truancy. Today the government announced a suite of changes as part of the attendance action plan: 📄Starting publishing of attendance data weekly from the second week of Term 2, 2024 📣Rolling out a communications campaign to improve awareness of the importance of students attending school from Term 2 2024 🏥Updating public health guidance to help schools and parents to decide if a student is well enough to attend school 🏫Clarifying expectations around attendance to school boards.
