Too often we overlook the impact of policies like Free Breakfast Clubs – last week I visited Beamish Primary School – which had previously self-funded its breakfast club. I had a tour of school, which has specialist staff working with SEND students, and chatted with Executive Headteacher Karen on the challenges of running a small but well-respected primary.
During the visit we went along to breakfast club, it was a wonderful atmosphere with music and games and lots of happy children getting a great start to the day.
Now that the breakfast club is government funded, the school can use the budget previously ringfenced for breakfast towards the wider school budget.
I look forward to visiting Pelton Community Primary, the other school in the Beamish & Pelton Federation.

An Independent Disciplinary Commission has today expelled Southampton from the Sky Bet Championship Play-Offs after the Club admitted to multiple breaches of EFL Regulations related to the unauthorised filming of other Clubs’ training.
In addition, the Club has received a four-point deduction that will be applied to the 2026/27 Championship table.
The effect of today’s order is that Middlesbrough are reinstated into the 2026 Play-Offs and will proceed to the Play-Off Final against Hull City. The final remains scheduled for Saturday 23 May, with the kick-off time to be confirmed.
