I get a lot of questions about where Yurt Rock started, so I figured I’d share the origin story right here. In 2018, after @NI_News acquired my previous company, @TheLoopLoft, I packed up the wife, kids (and the cat 🐈) and moved from West Des Moines to Los Angeles to join their team. We ended up in Laurel Canyon, renting a funky little house from an actress you might remember as “Wheelchair Wendy” on Curb Your Enthusiasm. On the property, Wendy had an amazing yurt she used as a guesthouse/pilates studio (pretty sure these are an LA building code requirement 😂). I needed a studio space, so I convinced her to let me move in my drums and recording gear. Turns out, the yurt was perfect: thick fabric walls, no hard surfaces, and a round shape that made the acoustics tight, dry, and super vibey. It instantly became my creative home base. And just like that, Yurt Rock was born. In 2021, I left Native Instruments to officially launch the Yurt Rock brand. So there you have it—the story of how a borrowed yurt in Laurel Canyon became the foundation for everything we do today.
